There is not just a relationship between the pieces on the wooden shelf and the photograph in North Pole Ice Calving; there’s a multidisciplinary link between them, too. The piece results from a scientific expedition that Tania Ximena did in Svalbard, Norway. She took small pieces that fell off enormous glaciers and covered them in alginate to create reproductions in ceramics—cool materials that mimic the cold origins of these small sculptures. The sculptures are accompanied by images of the expedition that show the context in which these small pieces of glaciers originated. This approach shows how landscapes can be viewed through both artistic and scientific lenses. It also shows the possibility of honoring the history of spaces through the artistic process.
