Cárdenas studied art at the Rhode Island School of Design, in the United States, and later obtained a master’s degree in Fine Arts at Yale University. Throughout his career, his works have addressed artistic trends such as pop art, hyperrealism, and conceptualism. He has earned various recognitions for his work as a teacher, including Distinguished Visiting Professor at Miami Dade Community College in 1983. He was director of the Escuela de Bellas Artes de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia from 1972 to 1974, where he was also an emeritus professor of art. He has shown his work in more than 40 individual exhibitions in Colombia and elsewhere and has participated in more than 60 group exhibitions in countries like Spain, the United States, France, the Dominican Republic, and Venezuela.
