Even without looking at the piece’s title, one can understand Santiago Cárdenas’s image as three pants on a canvas. Although in the 1960s there was a significant presence of abstract expressionism—in which works were the product of the artist’s bodily expression—Cárdenas retained his admiration for classic artists who captured a moment or person in great detail. So, why pants and not a landscape or a portrait? Motivated by the possibilities offered by the illusory three-dimensionality of a painting in a physical context, he captured these objects exactly as they are on a canvas, making them an extension of their environment regardless of whereverh work was placed.
