Alfredo Jaar is an artist, architect, and filmmaker. He studied at the Instituto Chileno Norteamericano de Cultura and the Universidad de Chile until 1981. Since, he has used various mediums to illustrate how communities represent and manage social crises. His works have addressed political and social issues, such as genocide, the displacement of refugees, and the balance of power between developed and developing nations. He has received recognitions such as Guggenheim (1985) and MacArthur (2000) fellowships, the Premio Nacional de Arte in Chile (2013), the Hiroshima Art Prize (2018) and the Hasselblad Award (2020). His work has been part of the Venice Biennial (1986, 2007, 2009, and 2013), the São Paulo Biennial (1987, 1989, 2010, and 2021), Documenta de Kassel (1987 and 2020), as well as more than 100 of individual exhibitions and 200 group exhibitions.
