Rueda y rueda is a bicycle made from metal threads. While the piece’s technique is clear, it is far from simple; the idea arose when Velázquez saw a bicycle that reminded him of his childhood and in which he sensed a representation of the human heartbeat. Throughout the creative and production process, he kept in mind the images that spurred the creation of this object, some of them associated with family members. Hand-weaving with cold and difficult-to-handle materials, the pain produced by her memories became cathartic. The result is a testament to the permanence of memory and family ties.
Colección FEMSA has an image bank of the works that comprise it—a resource intended for researchers, publishers, and art institutions. The Collection is open to lending requests for shows in Mexico and other countries.
