Carla Rippey
Los fusiles

In this triptych, Carla Rippey depicts three scenes with rifles. The first image—a representation similar to those in American history books—shows a series of men in uniform walking in the same direction. Their movements and postures convey a character of determination, which gives the weapon a role of authority. In the second, a group of men also each hold a rifle. However, their postures and gestures suggest a less formal context in which the gun is an accessory. In the third and last, a woman visibly uncomfortably holds a rifle, which highlights the object’s power. Although the work takes the rifle as its guiding axis, each of the scenes addresses different concepts associated with firearms, such as control, power, and violence.
Colección FEMSA has an image bank of the works that comprise it—a resource intended for researchers, publishers, and art institutions. The Collection is open to lending requests for shows in Mexico and other countries.
