One of the central themes in Runo Lagomarsino’s work is historical constructions, such as colonialism, and their effects on our perception of geography and the dynamics within it. If You Don’t Know What the South Is, It’s Simply Because You Are From the North alludes to the idea that the territories cartographically placed in the North tend to enjoy more resources and privileges than those in the South. The piece represents the words in its title and plays with the idea of distorting a message based on the viewer’s position—a nod to the varied ways of seeing geographical positioning.
