Betsabeé Romero’s relationship with traditions and popular art led her to create pieces commemorating Mexico’s historical and social evolution, including the processes of miscegenation and globalization. Des-aparición coronada II comprises various elements, such as pigments, dried roses, wood, and glass. In the same way that traditions are made up of years of stories, changes, and reinventions, each element in the piece plays a role in the composition. The different colors in the grid can be interpreted as representing the mestizaje central to the Mexican identity. And dried roses allude to communal beliefs.
