Ávila presents a set of black-and-white lines and shapes with few frills. Herrera witnessed various sociopolitical conflicts throughout her life, and in this piece, she seeks to express herself through order in a context marked by chaos. Her minimal works represent particular ideas or interests, like characters or places. Ávila can be considered a minimalist representation of Saint Teresa of Ávila. From this perspective, shapes and colors suggest order and seriousness and make room for interpreting the possible gestures within the composition. Could the lines be arms? Or is this a close-up of something else?
Colección FEMSA has an image bank of the works that comprise it—a resource intended for researchers, publishers, and art institutions. The Collection is open to lending requests for shows in Mexico and other countries.
