María Izquierdo’s Alacena makes us think about typical cupboards in family homes. In the scene, the viewer can appreciate a collection of objects: religious symbols, animal figurines, and characters from Mexican cultures. The difference in sizes suggests the asynchronous integration of each element. And while the origin of each piece is uncertain, together they make up a universe immortalized through painting. Izquierdo allows us to explore the diversity of the Mexican imagination through elements whose meaning is defined by their position in the cupboard and their dialogue with surrounding objects.
