Francisco Matto

(Montevideo, Uruguay, 1911-1995)

Bio

Starting in his childhood, Francisco Matto took drawing and painting classes with artists like Carlos Rúfalo. In his youth, he began to acquire pre-Columbian art, which influenced his artistic and theoretical research. Eventually, his collection became the Museo de Arte Precolombino, which opened its doors in Montevideo in 1962. His visual works depict a geometric language and compositions based on vertical and horizontal structures. In 1969, he won first prize for the silver coin he designed for the Central Bank of Uruguay, awarded by the Gesellschaft für Internationale Geldgeschichte. In 1982, he was invited to participate in the Primer Encuentro Internacional de Escultura al Aire Libre, held in Punta del Este, Uruguay.
